This tome looks at the life and works of the intensely private director that brought us a small but extraordinary body of work. His role of credits include amongst others, Paths of Glory, Dr Strangelove , 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket and finally the work which was to be his last - Eyes Wide Shut.
If this biography appears to merely skim the surface of Kubrick's character then the reason lies herein. Writing about an enigmatic personality of Kubrick's magnitude poses problems. Baxter wrote this biography without ever having been granted an audience with the enigmatic director. Baxter is aided by amongst others, actors, technicians and childhood friends in piecing together the man whose imagery has defined our cinematic past. Riveting stories told by fellow collaborators allow a glimpse into the complex nature of an incredible man. The definitive Kubrick novel has yet to be written however Baxter has produced a thoroughly good read which moves along at a good pace without sacrificing cinematic detail.
Kubrick's vision has lead to the inspiration of many young directors and has finally been acknowledged by his peers by being awarded a posthumous award for lifetime achievement at the BAFTA awards and the re-release of A Clockwork Orange in cinemas in the United Kingdom.
