Fight Club 2 Disc Boxed Set, Region 1 DVD
DVD, Justin Harries, 15 January 2001 Rating: F4

Now up for grabs! David Fincher's anarchic anti-materialistic masterpiece, available in super deluxe, shiny double CD, yours to own forever! OK enough with the irony. Anyone with a modicum of intelligence knows the gulf between Finchers words and actions. But subversion sells itself within the system, undermining from inside. However, this movie's rhetoric is so unsubtle it has no way of disguising itself as a Trojan horse. So where does this leave Fight Club? Just some empty bombastic bullshit by an ex ad man? Or a virtual call to arms for the disenfranchised? Neither really. In the end, Fight Club is a bloody enjoyable movie. Nonsense, but very, very enjoyable nonsense.

Right, back to the irony, sorry DVD. Its not hard to laugh at Brad Pitt's anti-corp hectoring whilst holding that lovingly produced double disk spread with its not-quiet-cardboard finish and mock scuffed photography. Things get even sillier when viewing CD 2 - the one that contains the extra goodies. And what a wealter of stuff. Stacks of alternate angles, deleted scenes (not quite stacked) and a wealth of special effect stuff. Watching the time money and energy that went into the creation of these scenes makes you realise what massive productions movies like Fight Club are - Dogma this ain't. Nice features are the ability to run through the entire movie via storyboards, or take a ride through the brain map of the opening titles, or even check out a nude two headed Helena Bonham Carter. It's a shame that Norton's interview is simply a transcription, but apart from this there's plenty of polished (grungy polish of course) titbits to pick from. Worth splashing out for the hypocritical highlight of the week.
