Those of you who came away from the flashy, loud, and somewhat hollow Lost in Space last summer probably couldn’t give a monkeys that if the deleted scenes had been replaced, then the film would rival The Seven Samurai in length. Whether the replacing of those extra scenes would bring LIS up to the quality of Kurosawa’s action epic is unlikely, however it would tie up why half the cast (the female contingent of the Robinson family) were almost absent in the last third of the film.
There’s a couple of titbits where get extra effect’s shots of the hydroponics area where they pick up the gulping CGI space monkey. Max fun points obtainable from scenes of old blank face William Hurt pointing up at a giant blue chroma-key backdrop and going , ‘Look..isn’t this INCREDIBLE !’. There’s a scene where Hurt gets expository on Joey from friends about the nature of time travel, and scenes set within different time bubbles with different weather conditions – both quite happily left in the bin I’d say.
But the real revelation is where spunky Penny goes running after the monkey (dropped in as jerky flat sketches from the storyboard), and comes across a giant four eyed muppet monster in a cave. Said monster goes quickly from threat to loveable softy in minutes as all the Robinson girls turn up for a big maternal coo-fest. The giant muppet makes a surprise appearance at the end too, just when you think he’s been toasted along with the planet. Heart-warming stuff for sure, and unbelievably almost worth about 25 minutes of the film’s plot. You can just imagine the guys in the boardroom dropping the axe on these scenes – "I’m mean, I know we’re making a piece of shit here Bob – but even we have limits". Best deleted DVD ever, period.
