 MTV and Star Trek.
Now we've covered off the clichés, we can talk some sense about Tom Tykwer's "Run Lola Run."
You see critics get nervous when movies have too much pop music in the sound track, too many jump cuts in the editing and too great a variety of visuals styles. They fret and worry about whether the movie is crowd-pleasing rubbish rather than an opus set to take it's worthy place in the cinematic cannon, proudly following precidents laid down by so many films that came before.
Tom Tykwer's "Run Lola Run" is an iconoclastic visual feast. He relishes breaking cinematic rules and thrills audiences with his absolute determination to suprise and challenge.
It's true, the plot is a bit like a Star Trek episode, but one of those cool ones where the ship enters a time loop and everything gets messed up. As Lola (Franak Potente) runs through the streets trying to save her boyfriend's life, the plot frenetically twists and turns, occasionally taking us right back to the beginning to see if there isn't a better way for things to turn out.
With film, video, animation and a techno soundtrack, this is a highly entertaining movie that will have you on the edge of your seat one minute, and laughing loudly the next.
