12 years on and I still don’t know what 'Hasta la Vista' means, but that doesn't stop me enjoying one of the defining moments of modern science fiction cinema, in the form of the excellent Terminator 2: Judement Day Ultimate edition DVD. Having suffered from some pretty serious release date-slippage, the DVD release of this classic Schwarzenegger/Cameron epic from Momentum Pictures has been loaded up to the eyeballs with extras. Packaged in something that could be a Cyberman's lunch box, T2 comes on two discs. Disc one contains the special edition of the movie itself (the one with extra scenes including Sarah's hospital room vision of Kyle), excellently mastered in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with an audio commentary and some cast & crew bios. The picture quality is astonishing, with the deep blacks and Cameron's trademark blue-white highlighting being shown off in the best possible way, bar renting a cinema and original print of the movie yourself. Regarding the quality and impact of the sound, I am almost tempted to discourage vegetarians from this DVD, it is that meaty. The explosions and gunshots will be making your neighbours think you are having some pretty serious domestics, should you have the surround sound set-up to make the most of it. The only slight disappointment with the audio commentary is that it is not really a real-time commentary at all, but rather a collection of interview soundbites from James Cameron and various other crewmembers. Disc 2 boasts a veritable Alladin's cave of extras (assuming Alladin was a big DVD enthusiast) including 3 documentaries, trailers, script, production notes and sketches, and tons on one-off insights into the making of the movie. Pop this disc into your player, grab an econo-sized bag of crisps and kiss goodbye to those rainy Sunday afternoons. Overall, Terminator 2: Ultimate DVD edition is an essential buy for DVD lovers everywhere. In fact, the only people who this item wouldn’t appeal to is those who don’t like the movie to start with. Weirdos.
Directed by James Cameron
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong & Robert Patrick.
