This was always going to be popular. With such a fantastic movie, it would be hard to fail. And the subject matter of the Matrix is ideally suited to the extra tricks that the DVD format is capable of. Even so, the nice people at Warner Bros are to be congratulated. With The Matrix DVD they've really excelled themselves.
Making full use of new "PC Friendly" technology from InterActual, the DVD content links seemlessly with web content, launching web browsers and logging on to dicussion forums at the click of a mouse, (if you're using Windows - see below).
Non-PC users still get access to a wealth of features including the bizarre but intriguing "Follow the white rabbit" mode. As you watch the movie, a cheesy white rabbit icon sporadically appears in the bottom right had corner to indicate that extra behind-the-scenes material is available. By simply clicking on the rabbit (or hitting the enter key on the remote) you can access the extra material, and automatically return to the same point in the movie when you've finished.
There are also two documentaries, and two talk throughs from special effects gurus and composer Don Davis, and several essays and other material. For as little as $19.99, this is fantastic value for money.
A word or warning for Mac users. The so-called "PC friendly" features render this DVD almost unusable on the Mac. There is a work-around, however. Simply hold down the Apple, Alt, Control and "i" keys as you insert the disc. This should force the Mac to mount this disc as ISO96660 format. You can then play the DVD content. Using Netscape, you should also be able to access most of the web pages, although not from the DVD.
