When I first saw promotional stills from Barry Sonnenfeld's new movie, you could say that my interest was piqued. You see, I’ve been awaiting a steam punk movie for many a year and WWW, with its mechanical spider and bizarre gadgets seemed like steam punk on a very, VERY high budget. Also the movie is a reunion of Sonnenfeld and Will Smith – who’s Men in Black was an island in a sea of movies being passed off as big screen entertainment. I believed we were in for a rather bizarre rewriting of American history. In fact, the most bizarre thing about WWW is that it is such a non-event. Sequences rush by mechanically, without involvement or any sort of pacing (the amount of times the cast get captured, escape, only to be recaptured would put a Dr. Who script to shame). The whole construction of the film seems skewed, the action dwindles instead of escalating. A good cast is wasted, and Smith seems too nice for the guns blazing, macho man Jim West. Poor Salma Hayek comes of worst, in a role that is literally just T & A for the lead characters to ogle. All in all considering the talent and opportunities involved, WWW continues the grand tradition of wasting celluloid that Hollywood does so well.
