Ah, yes, more reminiscing I’m afraid. Remember that great old vector graphics dinosaur Battlezone? Remember how cool it felt, taking the controls of that cyber-tank, slowly trundling around that curiously bleak green-lined landscape looking for other tanks, super tanks and (gasp!) the dreaded flying saucers? Well for all you young whipper-snappers out there, don’t worry, for the sequel has action that isn’t as slow and graphics that aren’t as bleak.
For behold, Battlezone II is here in all its glory, courtesy of gaming giants Activision. Gorgeous landscapes like this take all the power of a pretty major PC set-up to really do them justice, but be warned, you WILL find yourself happily cruising around taking in the scenery just before you get blasted into atoms. Underwater and Jungle levels add to the rich diversity of pixellated pleasantries on offer here. My only qualms are with the usual nightmare keyboard control set-up (buy a game pad) and the fact that a title of this kind, which doesn’t really look or play any better or worse than similar 3D blaster titles, has the impossible task of following one of the truly groundbreaking videogame milestones.
There is tons of gameplay and strategic shenanigans to get your teeth into, as Russia and the USA team up to fight a force from another world, but don’t you wish you were standing in some smokey arcade, squinting at some green lines behind a huge magnifying glass? No? Weirdos.
