Crash Team Racing, PlayStation
Games, Richard Young, 20 January 1999 Rating: F4

Jumping Flash, Banjo Kazooie, Earthworm Jim; zany video game creature heroes one and all. But for Playstation fans, one pixellated critter reigns supreme: Crash Bandicoot. This latest outing has the cheeky little Bandicoot swapping genres in his first racing only title, Crash Team Racing. Looking quite similar to the recent Speed Freaks (which was the Playstation's first real Mario Kart style game), CTR has a car bootload of charm and playability, and the handling of the colourful go-kart style vehicles leaves Speed Freaks practically floundering in a cloud of video game dust.

Unlike the erratic handling of Sony's freaky racer, CTR couples instinctive playability with all the fun elements from Crash's earlier adventures; crates of TNT to throw at other Karts, Wumpa fruit to collect, and of course invulnerability afforded by Aku Aku, the bizarre floating witchdoctor mask. Sharing the well designed and varied tracks are a motley crew including old enemies such as Dr. Neo Cortex, Dr. N. Gin and Tiny Tiger, as well as Crash's sister Coco.

Crash Team racing may be a little cutesy for some, and the truly cynical might bemoan the lack of totally original ideas; Wipeout style speed-up arrows and weapon pick-ups are blended with elements lifted from the previous three outings. The truth however is that Crash Team racing is a blast - well designed, well executed and above all, fun. And that's what video gaming is all about, innit?
