Destruction Derby 3, PlayStation
Games, Richard Young, 20 January 1999 Rating: F5

In what looks like an attempt to shape the Destruction Derby franchise along the lines of the WWF and WCW with their "warzone", "thunder" and "smack down" titles, Studio 33 have come up with "Destruction Derby – Raw". Believe it or not, it is now possible to string together "combos" resulting in vehicular destruction with names like "Face Slapper" or "Teeth Rattler", possibly heralding the first ever mixture of Beat-em-up and Racing genres. In reality, this is actually very similar to the previous Destruction Derbys 1 and 2, but with a few groovy extras thrown in for good measure.

A very healthy number of tracks/arenas (31 in total) give you a variety of gameplay seldom equalled in a title of this kind. For me however, the most appealing new feature is the inclusion of three rooftop based tracks, which allow you the ability to nudge your opponents off the top of skyscrapers into gravity-dominated oblivion. The cars themselves are made up of a larger number of polygons than the previous two DD outings, which means the damage your car receives looks more varied and realistic than ever before. The physics are realistic without being as pedantic as Gran Turismo, for example, and there are enough modes of gameplay to satisfy the most seasoned of virtual racing enthusiasts, including a rather clever four-player option.
It’s amazing how developers seem to have refined the programming of the now relatively humble PS1 to the point where it is possible time and time again to squeeze just a bit more performance from its circuits. Destruction Derby – Raw is everything you would expect from a sequel to two already very fine games. Despite Studio 33 having a tough act to follow in the shape of previous developers, the very groovy Psygnosis, they really have done the biz with this one. Never before have acts of mindless destruction and a blatant disregard for human life been so much fun.
