Dukes of Hazzard, PlayStation
Games, Richard Young, 20 January 1999 Rating: F2

Why it was only recently that a colleague of mine was saying: "you know what would make a really good driving game? The Dukes of Hazzard!". Well, by some bizarre twist of fate, developer SouthPeak Interactive have gone and done just that with Dukes of Hazzard: Racing for Home. Yes folks, Bo and Luke are wheeled out of retirement once more to make an appearance on Sony’s Playstation. Whether or not it actually makes a good driving game, however, is debatable. Any game that decides to be influenced by, and thus ultimately compared to the likes of Driver, Destruction Derby and Colin McCrae 1 & 2, is going to have a hard time impressing the punters. The background to the game is much like the average Dukes of Hazzard episode. There is some flimsy plot based around some naughty bank robbers, and the standard cut scenes are all present and correct. Bo, Luke, Daisy, Boss Hogg and the like play their part in attempting to keep the player distracted from the second-rate gameplay, which, unfortunately suffers from the old "sounds good on paper but sucks in reality" problem. Everyone’s favourite hot rod, The General Lee, looks great, but the handling is so idiosyncratic as to be darn near impossible. During the various missions which include both pursuing and being pursued, often the merest hint of collision can send the General into orbit, while other times it seems that a head on collision at a combined speed of 120 mph barely ruffles the Duke boys’ hair. There are one or two attempts at originality, like the ability to shoot out your opponents tyres, but on the whole, Racing for Home is exactly what this game will be doing whenever the big boys like Gran Turismo and its siblings are in town.
