Fighting Force 2, Dreamcast
Games, Richard Young, 20 January 1999 Rating: F3

The idea of kicking in a drinks vending machine, picking up a piece of it to lamp some suited heavy who is being held in place by your counterpart may not be everyone's idea of a good night out, but this is just the kind of scenario players of Fighting Force by Eidos would be used to. A 3D take on the classic Double Dragon, hiding behind the slightly shoddy graphics and seemingly repetitive gameplay was a genuinely exciting and original game, particularly in 2 player mode.

Fighting Force 2 has made it's way onto Dreamcast, and although being superior in many ways, it has lost a lot of the more immediate charm and 2 player shenanigans of it's predecessor. The option of four characters has been reduced to one; (straight-to-video-cop-named) Hawk Mason. Your mission is to punch, kick and shoot your way through hordes of oncoming bad guys, making use of any weaponry you might find along the way.

The coolest aspect of the first game was the ability to interact with the scenery around you and use anything you can find as a weapon. That is intact, and there is also a new dimension to the gameplay. Instead of just piling in as before, one is encouraged to be a little more tactful. You now have the ability to creep around corners and take the enemy by surprise, no doubt a nod to the success of Tenchu and Metal Gear Solid. Fighting Force 2 is a superior title, and the Dreamcast's graphics shine as always, but the loss of a two player mode is a shame.
