GT 2 - Gran Turismo, PlayStation
Games, Richard Young, 20 January 1999 Rating: F4

Well folks, it’s arrived. The sequel to Polyphony’s smash hit Gran Turismo is being touted as the "greatest game ever made" by advocates of Sony’s little grey box. And they may well be right. The courses now number 28 in total and include Ridge-Racer style city based circuits as well as a rallying option to challenge the superiority of the excellent Colin McCrae’s Rally. The original (and impressive) selection of vehicles has been doubled to around 600- each one possessing, believe it or not, distinctive looks, handling and sound effects.

My only reservation is a purely personal one. Just how much fun can driving around a racetrack be? You could design a fantastic looking game based around pushing a supermarket trolley, but you would still be just pushing a supermarket trolley. Can you fire missiles at your opponents? No. Can you morph into a giant monster and destroy the trackside buildings? No. Computer games should be about having pure, unadulterated fun, and the imagination plays a big part in that equation. Gran Turismo 2 is an incredibly slick and well made game, but it is just a driving game.

If you enjoy pounding around the same track again and again, tinkering with the gear ratio of your engine in order to shave a second or two off your lap times, then no doubt you will love this as much as you loved the original Gran Turismo. Technically brilliant, well designed and great to look at, GT2 will no doubt sell bucketloads, but don’t be offended if I take my rocket and fly off in the search of some space mutants.
