Medievil 2, PlayStation
Games, Richard Young, 20 January 1999 Rating: F5

Of all the Playstation games I have experienced over the years, the original Medievil has remained one of my all time favourites. It had everything; great graphics, cool characters, clever and varied gameplay and a good dose of very British, almost Pythonesque Humour. Needless to say I was excited at the prospect of a sequel and I am happy to report it fills all the above criteria, while adding a little something extra in the process.

Having taken a well earned rest from defeating evil wizard Zarok during the Dark Ages, poor old skeleton Sir Dan Fortesque is resurrected once again in Victorian London. This time his nemesis is the dastardly Lord Palethorn, who has laid his grubby mitts on Zarok’s spellbook and is animating his own undead army of zombies, vampires and general monster types. Similarities with the first game are in the form of the usual 3D hack n’ slash antics, key finding and platform jumping. Some levels are buggers to complete, but it’s the knowledge that they are not impossibly hard that keeps you coming back for more.

Unlike the recent hair-tearingly difficult Fear Effect, for example, bashing away at Medievil II is a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and as I mentioned the games’ humour helps immensely. At one stage in the game, you assemble your own body from various parts found lying around, including having to find your arse. When fighting your adversary, your limbs get hacked off one by one, until the only option is to headbutt your way out of danger. Marvellous stuff. Clever, witty and compulsive, Medievil II will knacker your social life but hey – you get to save the world in the process.
