Micro Maniacs, PlayStation
Games, Richard Young, 20 January 1999 Rating: F4

Micro Machines made its mark when it became the only reason to buy Sega’s handheld, the Game Gear back in the early nineties (is it me or does that sound weird?) Now several incarnations/platforms/years later, it has cropped up again, only now it appears our diminutive drivers have forgotten to bring their wheels and have resorted to zooming around the various domestic courses on foot.

Micro Maniacs is actually the sequel to the amazingly popular Micro Machines V3 for Playstation. While not pushing Sony’s machine to it’s graphical limits, Codemasters’ classic became the reason to buy a multitap for up to eight player fun, and set off a small domino run of similar titles including Mindscape’s successful Circuit Breakers. Those who remember the cartoon "Inch-high Private Eye" will see the similarity as your wacky little dude/dudette legs it over and around a variety of household items in their bid to become first including flowerpots, train sets, computers, kitchen utensils and games consoles(!) Employing the same isometric view of its predecessor, one does have to get used to the familiar steering controls where left and right remain the same regardless of the direction your little guy is facing. Resident Evil players will be adept at this. As with most non-realistic racers, a various array of weapons and power-ups are scattered liberally in your tracks, except this time your character has the ability to launch his or her own type of special attack by collecting up to four power-ups. Cool.

A game like this can only really be appreciated in multi-player mode, in which case the aforementioned multi-tap is a worthwhile purchase. Micro Maniacs is well honed and thoroughly recommended, although perhaps not the game for your average Johnny no-mates.
