A frequently overlooked segment of the racing game pie chart belongs to that of the motorcycle racer. To help address this balance, arcade and PlayStation gurus Namco invite you to straddle their latest throbbing beastie in the shape of Moto GP for PlayStation 2. Those who prefer their virtual mean machines to have just two wheels have been waiting for a racer to rival the likes of the Ridge Racer series, Gran Turismo or Wipeout, and despite Namco’s admirable effort, they may have to wait a little longer. Graphically, this game is very functional, and as you would expect to see in today’s next-gen racers pop-up and frame-rate slowdown are again consigned to the videogaming bin. Good riddance. Game modes are divided into Season, Arcade, and the usual time trial and quick race options. It’s all what you would expect from your videogame racer, and everything is slickly presented and polished, typifying Namco’s attention to detail. It’s just a shame that despite having all the right ingredients, the overall experience is in need of some serious dollops of cyber-soy sauce, being as it is a little bland. The controls feel nice and tight, however, and differ from most car-based racers in that one really needs to implement braking more often when approaching corners, unless you get some kind of cruel enjoyment from seeing your rider skidding across gravel on his buttocks. One of the more unusual graphical features is the inclusion of cheesy mug shots of the motorcyclists that mysteriously appear over the heads of your competitors when you get close to them. It is off-putting to see the guy who just cut you up during the last hair-pin, beaming down at you in all his mulleted glory. You almost expect a voice over to say “Hi, I’m Roscoe Maxwell, you might remember me from such movies as
.” Moto GP is a fairly okay game, but personally, I didn’t buy a PlayStation 2 to play fairly okay games. I want the blistering graphics, sound and gameplay that Sony has been promising us, the likes of which has been worryingly absent in the current range of PS2 titles. I want Gran Turismo 3 and I want it NOW! Okay
..July, then.
