Outtrigger, Dreamcast
Games, Richard Young, 02:00:00, 01 October 2001 Rating: F5

It’s true to say that the Japanese in general don’t go nuts for First Person Shooters, so it is even more of a surprise that this latest number from Sega and AM2 is such a stonking game. Taking its cues from the likes of Quake III: Arena and Unreal Tournament, Outtrigger is a fast ‘n furious shooter with all the necessary ingredients that bloodthirsty frag-fans will be familiar with. Machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers and mines are all available for firing or throwing in the general direction of the bad guys, which may or may not include up to 3 buddies via it’s funky split screen option. Sadly, the touted online play has been left off the European edition of the game, but it makes up for it for having such darned nice visuals and gameplay. An interesting bonus is the option to view the action via first or third person perspectives, the latter giving you a fun, Tomb-Raider style take on things. The various arenas are not as large as those from other First-Personers, but they are well designed, lovingly rendered and the limited size helps keep the action blazing. This presumably also helps with the framerate, which runs at an amazingly consistent 60 fps throughout. There is one main stumbling block when it comes to games of this kind, and that is with the method of control. Although it is possible to play with the standard Dreamcast pad, the whole procedure of moving while looking around and shooting is generally considered to be far easier with a mouse and keyboard set-up. This may be the case, but I am pleased to say that Outtrigger seems better suited to pad control than other games of its ilk. A huge line-up of training missions are designed to help the player get to grips with controls, from simple movements to side-stepping and onto moving while firing. For those who are already big Quake or Unreal fans, you may not see the need for another, fairly linear action game. Those who are new to the genre, however, will enjoy Outtriggers arcade-style look and feel, and the frantic, non-stop blasting. A tough game to beat, but the replay value is high, and manÂ….it’s pretty.
