It's hard to believe the Eighties is now over a decade behind us. Enduring images of mullets, dungarees and Duran Duran are among many worth forgetting. For those who possessed an interest in a particularly strange and emerging pixellated world , one simple image captured the imagination of many an inquisitive schoolboy. It was a small yellow circle with a slice cut out of it.
Yes, Pac-Man has been resurrected by Namco and been given the full 3D platformer treatment in the process. You control a nicely animated, cartoony version of the Pacster, legging around various psychadelic environments. What is great about this particular title is the way all the elements of the original game are intact, and are presented in a way the modern game fan will appreciate. For example, now there are power pills that perform different functions, like invulnerability, and the ability to bounce on switches to activate doors and other mechanisms. The usual gang of ghosts are there, still trying to screw up your day. Pursuing me unceasingly. Why won't they leave me alone? It's not much to ask....
Sorry...anyway, Pac-Man World is smooth, easy to get to grips with and fun for those with a penchant for a retro title with a shiny new paint job. As platformers go, it may not have the fiery appeal of Spyro the Dragon or the simian humour of Ape Escape, but in the famous words of another Eighties icon, Roland Rat, "Yeah-he he heeey, Pac-Maaaaaan!"
