One year since the launch of the much hyped PlayStation 2, and it began to look like Sony’s big black brick didn’t only look like the sort of thing that you once had to retrieve from the bottom of a swimming pool, but was possibly just as interesting. Thankfully, some developers actually got their act together and bothered to learn the intricacies of this next-gen gaming enigma, instead of re-hashing any old sub-PC cobblers in the vague hope punters would be suckered into buying it (I’m looking at you, 3DO). So now that the season of goodwill to all gameheads is nearly upon us, just what is making Santa’s merry sack bulge this Christmas? Here is a pick of some of this season’s latest top game releases for those with a penchant for all things black and angular:
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3: Yes, even as I speak, the father of modern skateboarding and the single biggest contributor to knee injuries worldwide, Tony Hawk, is preparing to grind onto your PS2 in the latest incarnation of this horribly addictive game. If anybody asks you what you will be doing over the Christmas holidays, just tell them that you plan to land a 540 nollie off a half-pipe, and watch them back away, slowly.
Devil May Cry: Apart from sounding like a bad New Romantic band, this highly anticipated “survival horror” epic from Resident Evil masterminds Capcom looks to be the one game to truly make use of the PS2’s awesome polygon-pushing personality. Fun now officially comes from despatching the legions of hell with a sword the size of a door

Wipeout Fusion: The game that defined a generation and placed the original PlayStation in both homes and clubs around the country is given a next-gen makeover. The premise is the same; to fly super sleek anti-gravity ships around futuristic, vertigo-inducing tracks. Throw in some hefty new weapons and the latest pumping dance “choons” and you’ll be salivating all over your Dual Shock 2.
Airblade: Mix one part Tony Hawks, one part Trickstyle on Dreamcast, and a smattering of Wipeout’s design ethos and you have Airblade. While unlikely to steal Tony’s crown, Criterion’s funky hoverboarder wowed the crowds at ECTS this year with its incredible graphics and playability. Looking very similar to the hoverboard chase scene in the Back to the Future 2 but with better special effects.
Grand Theft Auto 3: What better way to celebrate the season of goodwill than shooting and looting the night away? GTA3 puts you in the hotseat of various stolen vehicles, as you wreak havoc upon the innocent citizens of Liberty City. Having evolved from the 2D top-down views of the first 2 games into full 3D glory, there is much crime-committing fun to be found in its many missions of menace. The perfect game for the felon in us all.
