Renegade Racers, PlayStation
Games, Richard Young, 20 January 1999 Rating: F2

In these heady days of great console racing games, yer Wipeouts, yer Ridge Racers and the like, a funny little sub-genre has sprung up, influenced no doubt in part by Nintendo’s hugely successful Mario Kart. The Playstation has since proved its’ mettle in this area as well as any other, with the fantastic Crash Team Racing and Speed Freaks leading the pack. One wonders then, why anyone would want to spend there hard earned on a lame title like Promethean Designs’ Renegade Racers.

On loading, the graphics don’t appear too bad, but you soon find yourself hankering for a bit of adventure, excitement, all the things a Jedi craves not. You are presented with a somewhat obvious bunch of cultural stereotypes, then asked to navigate your "zany" characters’ car/boat/hovercraft around various cartoon circuits, picking up and deploying as necessary the usual grab-bag of power ups, missiles, bombs etc. And that’s about it. With a game like this, the last thing you want to worry about is simply keeping your vehicle from veering wildly from the track, so be prepared for aching thumbs. This and the lack of original design/execution and it soon becomes obvious there is ultimately nothing to look forward to as the lights turn green, and the comedy voice-overs from the various characters are just irritating.

Games developers these days need to pull there finger out if they really want to shift units, what with the imminent arrival more next-generation machines, and particularly when so many classic Playstation titles are available as £19.99 Platinum specials. Renegade Racers isn’t terrible, but all it achieves is a shallow mimicry of some great existing titles. If it’s Mario-style fun your after, Crash Team racing is the mutts’ nuts. Renegade Racers is just (ahem), nuts.
