Japanese game developers Capcom are a clever bunch. First they make the Super Nintendo System the console of choice for those who weren’t impressed with Sega’s blue hedgehog, thanks to their Streetfighter series, then they come up with one of the most successful genre–defining games of all time; Resident Evil (known as Bio Hazard in Japan). By combining superbly paced adventure with blistering action, Resident Evil, and its superb sequel Resident Evil 2, managed to scare the pants off a generation of video game fans. The first time you saw that ominous black loading screen with the words "Welcome to the world of Survival HorrorÂ…", one could have hardly predicted the chilling accuracy of such a statement. So it goes without saying that Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is a belter of a game.
Capcom really have pulled out all the stops for what is the most cinematic and action packed game of the series. As previous heroine Jill Valentine, you get to roam pretty much the whole of Racoon City whereas the previous games concentrated on specific areas. Cleverly, the plot from the previous two games works as a backdrop for this one, as you uncover more and more shall we say, controversial goings on courtesy of experimental chemical company Umbrella. In true George Romero fashion, the whole city appears infected with the zombie plague, and it is your job to stay alive long enough to find out what the heck is going on. Oh, and this time you also have a nine-foot tall monster zombie with a rocket launcher for an arm to deal with, namely the Nemesis in question.
Knowing that this baddest of baddies could be lurking around the next corner is a chilling experience, especially with the disturbing music and sound effects adding to the overall tension. Graphically and gameplay wise, its business as usual, but then its difficult to improve on perfection. If you have played either of the first Resident Evil games, you don’t need me to tell you to buy this game. If you haven’t, then buy this game. Altogether now: GRRR! BRAINS!
