Rollcage from premier league developers Psygnosis was a racer that attempted to break the mould for console racing titles. With its successful mix of sci-fi pyrotechnics and gravity defying gameplay, it made racers enjoyable again. It proved there was nothing quite like launching a well placed missile at a trackside building, causing it to topple on top of your opponents, while trying not to get flattened yourself, of course. Now Rollcage Stage 2 is due to hit the shelves, and it looks like Psygnosis is about to have another hit on its hands. While it seems the whole world is waiting for Playstation 2, or playing Sega’s Dreamcast, here is a title that should help keep ‘station owners happy for the time being. The graphics are as excellent, but not noticeably better than those of the first Rollcage, whereas the user interface is a vast improvement. The confusing and illogical options and set up pages of the first game have been given a re-vamp, indicating the level of attention to detail the designers are committed to. The major plus point for me however, is the design of the new tracks. Now your fat-tyred jet buggy has to negotiate tracks which defy logic. No doubt built with a construction budget approaching that of the Millennium Dome, these futuristic raceways soar skywards, looping around before plummeting earthwards again, the sense of vertigo occasionally rivalling SCEE’s Jumping Flash for it’s sheer "WHHHOOOAH!!" factor. Fun stuff. One can but dream of what kind of a job these guys will do with the Playstation 2 version of Wipeout.
