"Spiderman, SpidermanÂ…does whatever a spider canÂ….." and so the playground battle cry of thousands of schoolboys echoed through the Seventies, despite the fact that Spiderman couldn’t quite do everything a spider could, namely eating flies and getting fried by a giant magnifying glass. Stan Lee’s arachnid/human hybrid superhero was cooler than Superman, wittier than Batman and had the best animated cartoon. Despite having a rough deal when it came to cinematic interpretation, the old Web-slinger is now in fine, baddie-bashing form on Activision’s forthcoming Playstation title. The first decent superhero related video game? Very possibly.
Take Tomb Raider and set it up in the skyscrapers of New York and your not too far from how the thing looks and plays. One of the most satisfying aspects of the gameplay is to jump from a tall building, throw out a web line and swing across to the next office block. It is nice to see that developers Neversoft have really paid attention to detail with each of Spiderman’s abilities. From that familiar squatting pose, to scuttling about on ceilings, to the familiar jagged lines around Spidey’s bonce indicating a tingling spider-sense. You could almost be playing the original 70’s cartoon (except the animation is better).
The old tried and tested "framing the good guy" plot provides the direction of the game, in which Spidey’s arch nemesis Doctor Octopus has been having fun creating an army of slimy symbiotic life forms ready to take over the city. There are cameos from various other Marvel heroes and villains who either give old webhead some helpful advice, or not so helpful fisticuffs. Ever wanted to go head to head with The Rhino? Or shoot the breeze with The Silver Surfer? Well nows your chance! The graphics are great, the gameplay is fun and varied and the music has those funky walking bass lines that just sound, right, somehow. I was about to give Spiderman an F4 for having a slightly too short story line, but then I discovered how easy it was to punch the bad guys off the top of tall buildings! F5 it is, then.
