One of the true feathers in Mr. Sony Playstation's cap was 1998's Spyro the Dragon. In some ways, it was made to prove a point that anything the Nintendo 64 could do, the Playstation could do - well, not better exactly but almost just as well. Resembling Mario 64 in many ways, the cute purple fire breathing Spyro trotted and glided around a colourful fantasy realm, picking up gems and saving fellow mythical chums. And that was about it. Kids loved it, and bigger kids no doubt found it a mellow, almost trippy post-pub gaming experience, albeit one which lacks any real challenge or depth.
Game developers Insomniac have appropriately responded to these criticisms by coming up with a sequel which is superior in every way. In Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer, the little winged one now has the ability to dive and swim, climb and hover around some stunningly well designed and panoramic landscapes.
New challenges include swallowing hot volcanic rocks and spitting them at distant enemies in a first person targeting mode, while a range of more taxing mini-missions provide a puzzle-tastic gaming experience with enough longevity to keep hardened button bashers happy well into the next Millennium. The N64 has of course gone on to prove it's superior 64-bit processing power with hits like Zelda and Rayman 2, but when it comes to 3D platformers on the humble 32-bit Playstation, they don't get much better than this.
