Joining the respected ranks of 3d space shoot-em ups for Playstation is no mean feat. Colony Wars, Blast Radius and Darklight Conflict have all managed to please the most discerning futuristic dogfight fan. But behold, for Activision has released a top notch title with (gasp) a Star Trek licence. Star Trek: Invasion puts you at the helm of a Valkyrie class ship (designed especially for the game under the watchful eye of Paramount) which I believe is a little like the heat-packing Defiant. The bad boys of the spaceways, the Borg, are up to their old tricks again and have their laser-pointer sights set on Earth again. Why exactly are they so desperate to assimilate a society that came up with the Millennium Dome? Oh well, there's no accounting for taste.
The look and the sound of this game are truly astonishing as you whizz about in your fighter, taking on Borg cubes, Romulan Cruisers and the aggressive little fighters of the insectoid Kam-Jahtae. The laser effects and explosions are awesome, particularly when there are dozens of ships flying in all directions, and the interference effect of something interacting with a crafts shields is also spot on. Even when the screen is packed with movement and detail, there is little to no slow down, which is a testament to the programming talents of developers Warthog. Throw into the mix an emotive and exciting soundtrack (complete with choir) and the vocal talents of Michael Dorn and Patrick Stewart and you basically have what could be the best and most enjoyable Star Trek game ever.
The handling of your ship takes a bit of getting used to, particularly as the training mission is there only to make the controls seem more complicated than they really are, but in no time you will be swooping, dodging and strafing with the best of them. Basically, if you like 3D space shooters that are more than just a pretty face, and you like Star Trek (even a little bit) then my advice is to head at warp speed to the nearest video game outlet and pick up a copy of Star Trek: Invasion. Engage!
