Toy Story 2, PlayStation
Games, Richard Young, 20 January 1999 Rating: F4

Games. Ah, yes, games. Mmm... Hopscotch, eh? Shove a Ha'penny ah, Yes...Small boys...jumpers for goalposts. Mmm...Mischief...Slugs and Snails...Toys eh? Stories...Oh yes, Toy Story 2, in fact.
Even before the sequel to Pixar's much-loved CGI tale of heroic cowboy doll Woody, and the bombastic spaceman Buzz Lightyear is released, the video game is all set to hit the shelves. The cartoony, colourful look of Pixar's computer animation lends itself well to the graphical capability of the Playstation which, despite now comparing badly to most PC's and Sega's Dreamcast, still manages to impress on certain occasions. You control Buzz as you navigate your way around the spacious domestic backdrops, running, jumping, and occasionally flying, as you collect tokens and power-ups and generally interact with the environment.
Games developer Travellers' Tales seem to have cracked the playability issue (often a problem with movie tie-ins) with an array of puzzles and brain teasers to keep the player busy. Despite the obvious appeal to the younger end of the computer games market, there is quite a bit to get your teeth into. Perhaps not quite as atmospheric as Spyro the Dragon, or as genuinely innovative as the Tomb Raider series, but a great platformer all the same. To infinity! etc...
