Bloody Hell! I have just finished a session of Wip3out (Wipeout 3) and my gob is well and truly smacked. Those geekoids like yours truly who rushed out and bought a Playstation when they were big news back in 1994 will have fond memories of the first Wipeout. It was THE game which showed off the power and playability of Sony's new Ubergadget, while simultaneously introducing a generation of streetwise teens and twenty-somethings to a cool new direction for console based games.
Wipeout combined awesome visuals, pumping "choons" by the likes of Orbital and The Prodigy, and a design and feel of a truly twenty-first century product. The F3600 anti gravity racing league graphics were seen on posters and t-shirts, and in shop windows and trendy fashion mags. 1995 saw the release of the more user-friendly Wipeout 2097. This worthy sequel boasted many new features such as more forgiving handling, more ships to choose from, and new power ups and weapons including the fantastic "quake" weapon which sent a huge energy wave rippling through the track to toast the poor sod(s) in front. Personally, I preferred the original which still seemed to have a grittier edge and more adventurous environments. 2097's courses were a little samey and lacked the rollercoaster/stunt ramp stylings of the first game.
Leeds based development team Psygnosis have excelled themselves yet again by further improving this tried and tested formula. Wip3out now boasts pin-sharp hi-res graphics, newly designed ships and a few new weapons including the "force wall" which throws a force field across half the width of the track which other craft rebound off like tennis balls while your ship sails effortlessly through. Another kicking new feature is the split-screen two player mode, which more than makes up for the hassle of finding two Playstations and two TVs for the original link up option. The bottom line is, if you own a Playstation you need Wip3out. With the continued success of the Wipeout series, you can bet there will be a version for the Playstation 2 next year. Ah! Be still my beating heart!
