Wipeout Fusion, Preview
Games, Richard Young, 20 January 1999 Rating: F5

As part of the hotly anticipated UK Playstation 2 launch scheduled for October, Sony ensure us many A-list launch games will be available from day one. This is encouraging news indeed, and contrasts sharply with the Dreamcast’s continuing dearth of quality titles. Among the many games that will be available, there promises to be a new, state of the art addition to a certain anti gravity racing league franchise. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, prepare to be amazed. For Wipeout Fusion will be racing onto a screen near you soon.

This is quite major, considering that the original Wipeout, along with Tekken and Ridge Racer, became the main reason to own a Playstation, just in case any gamers found themselves tempted by the Sega Saturn. So far only appearing as a non-playable demo at this May’s E3 trade show, Wipeout Fusion promises to be absolutely stunning. We have recently witnessed this in-game footage, and can honestly say it was "jaws on the floor" time at Foocha towers. Developers Studio Liverpool have taken all the back story from the original trilogy of games and have added new ships, tracks and weapons, as well as one or two more intriguing features such as "off road" areas where the pilot is offered greater freedom of flight. The most obvious overhaul is with the all new PS2-powered graphics engine. Incredibly detailed and outlandish buildings and scenery glide past at an eye-pleasing 60fps, while the shadow and lighting effects push the whole effect to near photo-realism. No doubt the sound and music will be as impressive as the previous games, too. Expect to see some big name dance and techno outfits contributing to this futuristic pulse-pounder.

Just in case fans of the original games are worried about resigning Wipeouts 1, 2 and 3 to the back of the gaming shelf, remember you will be able to play all your existing PS1 titles in an enhanced mode thanks to the backwards compatibility of Sony’s new dream machine. My only concern is, come October, will I ever see the daylight again?
