Beck, Wembley Arena
Live, Dan Wolff, 20 January 1999 Rating: F4

Midway through the set, as the band start up the best song Prince never wrote, Debra, a double bed decends from the roof onto the stage fitted with matching red satin sheets and pillow cases. Beck then rolls about on the bed while singing and humping with an imaginary lover. This is not like a typical Ocean Colour Scene gig.

Earlier, we were treated to songs covering his previous albums only to be muffled through The Arena's piss-poor sound system which luckily seemed to improve as the evening progressed. The New Pollution, Novacane and Lord Only Knows, all from 1996's Odelay sounded fresh and funky, as did his 'slacker classic' Loser, which was dispensed of four songs in suggesting it might be a weight round his neck he would sooner get rid of. The new songs from last year's Midnite Vultures blended just as well, especially rousing versions of Milk & Honey and new single Mixed Business.

After Nicotine & Gravy, Beck is left on the vast stage by himself with an acoustic guitar to delve back in time with early material such as Pay No Mind and the pre-Loser One Foot In The Grave. The highlight of the evening arrives when he is joined by his bass player and a sitar player for an outstanding performance of Nobody's Fault But My Own from Mutations. The band return to the stage (for reasons best kept to themslves they are wearing 'mullet wigs' and cricket padding) to perfom a triple-Odelay-whammy of Jack Ass, Where It's At and Devil's Haircut. Soon after Beck stumbles off stage clutching his stomach (it is later revealed he impaled himself on the bass!) which leaves the band to destroy most of the equipment. When 'The White James Brown' returns for festival dates this summer, fuck Travis and see a real entertainer.
