They may look mean, but once you hear the magnificently melancholic sounds of Cousteau it's hard not to be instantly won over. Formed in London 1998, they released their self titled debut album last year which was some how overlooked by critics and fans alike, failing to make any Top 50 lists of 2000 or make a dent on the charts. Given the right audience this could change. Lead singer Liam McKahey sounds like a cross between David Bowie and Nick Cave fronting a house jazz band.It sounds unpromising but somehow it works brilliantly.
Tonights' packed show sees them playing material mostly from their only album with a couple of new ones thrown in. Jump In The River and Your Day Will Come sound as lush live as they do on record. The single, The Last Good Day Of The Year, hints at a 'jazz sound' without ever sounding pompus. The closest comparison would probably be Air if they were lounge lizards. After two encores, including One Good Reason and the tremendous Of This Goodbye, they leave to an enthralled audience hopefully to return soon to deservedly bigger venues.
