Doves, The Scala, London
Live, Dan Wolff, 20 January 1999 Rating: F5

It has been a while since such a buzz has been felt about a band obviously destined for great things. This changed at The Scala on Thursday night as the Doves took the stage to a frenzied welcome from a crowd who haven't even heard their debut album 'Lost Souls' which is released today (Mon 3 April).

Destroying any misconceptions that they are just an acoustic band, they open the set with the rocking Catch The Sun and immediately you realise they are a special band. Each song played tonight could be a set highlight for regular bands but they manage to never wane, just get better. Here It Comes and recent re-release The Ceder Room sound achingly brilliant live as the band sound tighter and more confident than when they played The 100 Club last summer. Set closer New York, which isn't even on Lost Souls, suggests more promising things to come in the future.

They might not have the stage presence of Kiss, hence the back projections, but the music more than makes up for this. With pathetic gimmick-bands like Slipknot desperately trying to cover up the fact their music is shite by wearing 'scary' masks, the Doves are a breath of fresh air. Eight songs, 45 minutes, no encore, no bullshit. The band of the future have just arrived.
