Iggy Pop
Live, Dan Wolff, 20 January 1999 Rating: F3

Iggy Pop takes to the stage half an hour late after playing deafening techno over the p.a. and....sits down! No willies, no blood, no danger, just sits down. With only one backing musician he recites the first two numbers from his new album Avenue B, No Shit followed by Nazi Girlfriend. There is a slight problem as his new album is mostly spoken word in the vein of Tom Waits and is somewhat flawed live as it contains little music. At 52 years of age he no doubt felt compelled to make a (non rock) change of direction which must have seemed like a brave move at the time but now sounds stale.

Luckily, he knows his loyal fans don't want to hear the new album in it's entirity and turns tonight into a greatest hits set. So what we get is I Wanna Be Your Dog, Raw Power, Lust For Life, Search And Destroy, etc. Even though everyone has heard these songs hundreds of times they still sound as powerful as ever, especially in these intimate surroundings. The few songs on Avenue B that avoid spoken word, Shakin' All Over and new single Corruption, are aired tonight and go down a treat.

Ending the evening with TV Eye and No Fun reminds us how good he is in his element of live performance. Numerous stage diving and destruction of mike stands, whilst never standing still for a second, tell us he could be around for a few more years to come. If someone could get him to pick up a guitar it would be even more welcome.
