Returning to the live scene for this second low key show after nearly 18 months away, Mansun seem to be just as fired up as they were before. Opening with a rock-tastic version of live favourite "Take It Easy Chicken" seemed the best way to get fans straight into the swing of things. This is followed by the new single "I Can Only Disappoint U" which failed to deliver live as it does on record. After their time away it would have been nice to report this as a great comeback single which sadly it isn't, merely a rehash of their other songs. Playing it safe, they play a large number of older songs including the long version of "Being A Girl" and "Special/Blown It," both from the album Six. The magnificent "Stripper Vicar" still sounds like one of the best songs ever, as does majestic "Wide Open Space".
The main let down tonight is the new material. Although it is only a first hearing, nothing seems to stand out against the older material. "Comes As No Surprise" is played early and sounds typically like a slow Mansun epic but not much else. "Electric Man" is particually weak going nowhere slowly, as does "Love Is..." which leaves the crowd motionless. They close the set with two from their first album, "She Makes My Nose Bleed" and a version of "Taxloss" which seems to never end. They encore with two more old songs, "Everyone Must Win" and b-side "Drastic Sturgeon" complete with dodgy lyrics ("shop at Quiksave and you make a big saving"). It is a welcome return but new album Little Kix, due out 14th August, could well get left behind Coldplay and David Gray.
