Marilyn Manson, London Docklands Arena
Live, Dan Wolff, 27 January 2001 Rating: F4

The Real Manson Family is the members of the crowd in attendence tonight of their hero Brian Warner, sorry, The God Of Fuck. It's more like a fetish fair than a concert which adds to the 'atmosphere' in this huge, sold out aeroplane hanger. Marilyn Manson is back in his element, ie.darkness, after his flat, daylight performance at last years' Big Day Out supporting Metallica. And however good the music is, it is all about performance as much as the theatre or circus. Over here to promote his recent excellent, if slightly overlong, Holy Wood album he pulls out all the stops when it comes to o.t.t. production.

Coming on stage behind a huge white sheet backlit to show him in a mock crucifixion pose, they set the tone by opening with Irresponsible Hate Anthem, followed by Death Song and recent single Disposable Teens sounding surprising fervid even from the back of the arena. The obvious dedication of his fans make it seem possible that if he did a set of Celine Dion cover versions they would still lap it up. Luckily the only cover is the usual Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics, which still sounds fantastic. Mixing newer material with the older and you realise how Manson has returned to his harder style after the slight lighter sounding and low selling Mechanical Animals album.

Digging back in time further with Lunchbox and the snappily titled Cake and Sodomy show where the early Nine Inch Nails comparisons come from along with the shared image of general gloom and destruction. Finishing the main set with The Love Song (sung from a podium) and a frantic Beautiful People, Manson leaves the stage amongst the dry ice and flashing strobes to return briefly with one more then disappear into the night. It's hard to be offended by Marilyn Manson as they are in the States but it's even harder not to enjoy the whole experience.
