Moby
Live, Justin Harries, 20 January 1999 Rating: F4

Who the hell is Moby? Christian evangelist, blissed out Ibeathian, cross skate punk? Looking over his recorded history file under ALL of the above. And by the standard of this concert add techo god messire.
It began strangely, disembodied vocals drifting over live backing. Moby playing mainly acoustic guitar thoughout, although a partially gnarly metal axe made a late appearance for a punked up cover of ‘paranoid’. The group looked as disparate as the source music, punk bassist, bizarre keyboard player adding to the vaguely confusing atmosphere. The menu included country ballads, ‘phat beat’ toe tappers, even a guitar only reprise of his first mainstream hit ‘Go’. At one point he apologised for being at the forefront of house music, only to play two such tunes that were undoutebly the highlight of the evening. The weirdest was left for last. If I was bemused at the beginning, I was utterly beguiled at the close. Moby, shirtless and sweaty, astride a keyboard as lights writhed and a Teutonic beat escalated. What the hell was going on?
I came with my preconceptions about Moby but had them amusingly wasted by this true oddity of a concert. The good thing about this style of eclecticism is that it appears effortless, as if he has stumbled into a musical jumble sale and came up trumps with a few quality bargains. As if he was driven by fun, rather than ‘career diversiviation’. And if that means confusion on a grand scale, then long may he continue to vex.
