Oasis, Wembley Stadium
Live, Dan Wolff, 20 January 1999 Rating: F2

SHITHOLE, BITCH, FUCK, TWAT. These are the words most frequently uttered by Liam Gallagher tonight who has truely seemed to have lost whatever 'it' was. In fact you cannot shut him up the entire set as his rambles on and on before the gig, something about Jim Kerr and Bob Geldof, during and in between the songs and he refuses to leave the stage at the end when the rest of the band and a large section of the crowd have gone. He doesn't even leave after the main set during the encore with the band, just stays on stage standing in front of Noel's mic mumbling about what a shithole the Stadium is. If it is so awful maybe they should have played Milton Keynes Bowl or would that just be too easy?

What about the songs? Well, the band itself, including new boys Gem and Andy Bell sound surprisingly tight. The sound system is also better than most stadium gigs which add to the shame that it was ruined by Gallagher Jr.Fuckin' In The Bushes acted as an intro followed by Go Let It Out and Who Feels Love?, both sounding promising dispite Liam continually talking over the songs. Supersonic and Shakermaker really kick the crowd into life along with live favourite Acquiesce. Gas Panic, probably the best song on the new album, is spoilt by too much guitar-wankery from Noel. Things reach a low when Liam stops the band before Wonderwall and refuses to go on until a girl down the front takes her bra off for the cameras. Move over Guns N Roses. Cigarettes and Alcohol produces a louder mass sing-a-long than any F.A. Cup Final, as does Don't Look Back In Anger and set closer Live Forever.

A clearly pissed off Noel returns to the stage for a great cover version of Neil Young's Hey Hey My My,the only song that is sung uninterrupted the entire gig. Champagne Supernova and Rock N Roll Star close the set, leaving Liam alone on stage playing with Noel's guitar. A confusing gig that seemed to be sabotaged on purpose for no ethical reason. Was Liam just winding his brother up at our expense? Was he playing up to the fact it was being shown on Sky One that evening ('are we professional enough for you?') and he had a bigger audience than usual? More likely it was either an act to make them more interesting than they are or they were trying to be crap because deep down they know they are. Either way, next time they shouldn't bother.
