Fiji are the new band formed from the ashes of the now defunct and continually underrated Scarfo who split up in May last year. Frontman Jamie Hince continues pretty much from where he left off, i.e. abrasive guitar and general noise not unlike early Sonic Youth with a little help from some keyboards. Recent mini album 'The Glue Hotel Tapes' is played in its' entirety so we are treated to caustic versions of 'Pillshop' and 'Cattlecount' which sound looser than usual. After making their debut in September at The Camden Falcon they have been increasingly improving but fail to deliver tonight maybe because of the small, nonchalant crowd or their first gig of the year. The final blaze of 'Lucien Turns Blue' and they're off. Definitely one to watch as on a good night they can superb.
Headliners Ten Benson appeared to have shaken the daunting 'comedy band' label and turned into a formidable rock band. This point may be hard to prove as they open with an intrumental version of 'I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside' but plough straight into a new song called 'Raggedy Man.' Their trick seems to be to keep it as simple as possible with one rife occasionally carrying the whole song. Case in point being the fantastic Rock Cottage (rhymed naturally with 'hot sausage') and new single Robot Tourist which should hopefully see some Top 40 chart action. Old favourites 'Uncle Benson' and set-closer 'The Claw' get the sold out crowd jumping like it's the Sex Pistols here again with a bit more fun included. With the music papers and even some of the broadcast taking notice, by the time their immanent debut album is released they could be around a lot longer playing to bigger audiences.
