Deep Blue Sea
Movies, Graham Bower, 20 January 1999 Rating: F3

Remember your excitement the first time you saw Jaws? The formula was perfect - big scary sharks eats its way through the cast one by one, leaving you guessing which character is going to be the one to kill it at the end. Indeed, the formula was so compelling, that Jaws opened up for three more helpings. By the end, however, I guess everyone was getting a little tired of the big fishy one.

The years pass by, and scientists serve us a diet of genetically modified horrors, and somehow the time feels right for a new shark movie.

Yes those evil scientist have been at it again with a bumper crop of GM sharks with super brains and the ability to swim backwards (apparently regular sharks can't).

DBS is pretty low-brow fodder as you might expect, but it's just silly enough to keep you watching until the end. Somewhere between Jaws and the Abyss, the smart sharks break in to Aquatica - an undersea science station, and pick off the all star cast, one ego at a time. I can guarantee you'll be suprised by who gets it... and when.

It's hard for me to say much more about this movie - it's instantly forgettable, and as soon as I walked out of the cinema, I had trouble in remembering what I had just watched. If you enjoy monster-chases-half-naked-girl movies, then this one is just for you.
