Never Been Kissed
Movies, Dan Wolff, 20 January 1999 Rating: F3

Drew Barrymore plays 25 year old Josie Geller,an up tight and shy copy editor at the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper.Desperate to turn reporter, she accepts her assignment of undercover reporter for high school culture, only to be reminded what a terrible time she had. While attempting to get with the 'in' crowd,at the same time trying to act seventeen, she only makes the situation worse. This changes with some help from her brother(David Arquette)who enrolls at the high school, making himself instantly popular and spreading favourable lies about his sister. The love interest comes in the form of Josies' English teacher, played by Michael Vartan.
The film marks the first film from Barrymores' own production company, Flower Films.Considering the substantial success of the film Stateside, it demonstrates she is not taking her new role lightly. Prehaps it was her idea not to put on the film poster "FROM THE DIRECTOR OF HOME ALONE 3."
Half way through the film, it takes an unexpected turn when Josies' boss wants her to be wired up with a hidden camera, turning her life into a 'Truman Show'-style event back at the office.Other minor quibbles are the predictability and the large number of stereotypes in the film (class bitches, typical school rebels and nerds) but it wasn't made to rival The Godfather.
In the end it works very well as a watchable light comedy with plenty of likeable characters and some very funny scenes.
