Oh dear! All the hard work Madonna spent playing Evita to convince us she is a good actress seem all but a distant memory as this corny, light-hearted 'comedy' is closer to Body Of Evidence awfulness than anything decent she has been in (not a lot admittedly). She plays yoga instructor Abbie who is unlucky in love and whose best friend in the world is Robert, played by Rupert Everett revivng his 'gay best friend' role from My Best Friend's Wedding a few years back. After a drunken sexual encounter between the two, Abbie falls pregnent and both agree to keep the child, Sam, and live in the same house. Fast forward five years and Abbie finds a partner who she wants to marry in the shape of Ben, played by Benjamin Bratt. This poses a problem as the two men don't get on and the question of who should look after Sam arises.
This is where the film takes a nasty turn as the they end up in court and dish the dirt on each other in a custody battle. The fact Abbie brings up Robert's previous sexual encounters in court to discriminate him seem particularly out of place. One of the many problems with the film is it cannot decide if it wants to be a comedy or a drama. Either way it fails. Also,we know the two leads are best friends in real life and it shows throughout the film as it turns more and more into a vanity project. In one of the many indulgent scenes reminiscent of Sleeping With The Enemy (the worst film ever made) we see the two of them dress up in someone elses house and prance around pointlessly. Sick bags may be a necessity at this point. There are a few funny moments from Everett but Madonna just seems stilted throughout. What promised to be a fun film turned out to be a waste of time for everyone.
