Titan A.E. is an odd idea for a movie, and one which seems to have slipped past the marketing department and arrived in the cinema without the Film Company execs noticing. Too childish for the older teen market, with themes to adult for the tiny-tots who normally devour candy coated animated fodder, this is a movie in search of an audience.
With the voice talents of Matt Damon and Drew Barrymore, Titan AE is not short on good looks, and the casts' animated alter egos are even more attractive. Matt Damon's long, muscular limbs look more Tom of Finland than Disney, and Barrymore's brooding animated pout sets pulses racing.
There's no doubt that Titan A.E. is a visual feast, with beautifully colourful and detailed animation, coupled with some stunning imagery - the speedboat chase through a swamp of exploding hydrogen trees was particuarly impressive. But a movie does not get by on looks alone (unlike Drew Barrymore), and while Titan A.E. is the best sort of eye candy, it's sadly lacking in the story department. An amalgam of Sci-Fi concepts, particuarly reminicent of the first Star Wars movie, it's nothing new.
Neither Sci-Fi blockbusters, nor animated features are renouned for their characters - and when Sci-Fi and animation meet, you're in trouble. Matt Damon's character seems to go off in all directions, and by the end, it's hard to believe you're watching the same movie you were at the beginning. You'll also need to turn a blind eye to the schultzy cute characters which bizzarely escaped from Toon Town and made their way on to the space ship.
A mixed bag then, but one which certainly deserves an F4 - if only for those fantastic visuals - check it out on a big screen, it's not often you'll see an animated Sci-Fi movie at your local multiplex.
