“Perplexed” best describes my feelings for this album. For a week now, I’ve been trying to figure it out. Initially it struck me as having great potential, I find the production intriguing, mostly plain guitars and bass, some occasional keyboard thing, neat. And the songs don’t immediately stick in my head, which is promising since “immediate catchiness” tends to quickly evolve into annoying and boring. The lead single “Chemistry” is close to immediate catchiness but just avoids it, and therefore still is my favourite. “Bed” is one of the low points and is the best example of the main problem Semisonic has on this album. They are dangerously close of easily being mixed in between Dolly Parton and Bruce Springsteen in a middle American trucker station. And while some would say this is good thing, I’m afraid that is not my cup of tea. The album is saved by “Chemistry” and “She’s got my number” (yes, I know it is a bit bland, but we benders like that). Perhaps it will grow further, but it will have to do so soon, since I won’t put up with it for much longer.
