The Tindersticks have always seemed a band defined by their image, so when they traded in their trademark suits for casual wear last time around, it must have appeared a betrayal on a par with Dylan going electric for most of their fans. The change was symbolic though. There had defintiely been a feeling that the band had pushed their original sound as far as it would go, and their last album saw them moving in a more soulful direction.
Now with a new album and a change of record company, would they try something new again ?
Well, ‘Can Our Love...’ was never going to be their unexpected party album. It’s more polished songs of sadness, backed by a beat like a heavy heart.
The opening track ‘Dying Slowly’is classic Tindersticks - the title alone could almost be a parody - but for the rest of the album they’ve continued with the soul sound they introduced on their last record. This time though they’ve expanded on it with the return of the strings they used to such effect on their earlier albums.
There’s the usual rich range of sounds; trumpet, cellos, and trombones, but deep down in the mix all you can really hear is the unmistakable sound of public indifference. This is a band honing their sound ever finer - but crooning to no one but the converted.
It misses the occasional stabs of noise that brass-for-hire Terry Edwards gave them on their early albums, which used to break up the mannered despair when it was in danger of falling into parody. But the ‘Sticks are still a class act, and if you’ve liked them up to now, you should like this. Just don’t expect too many surprises.
