Everyone agrees that Trickys finest moment is his debut LP, Maxinquaye, and that his releases since have been progressively more arqward, inaccessible and self indulgent, whilst occasionally giving glimpses of what we know this truly innovative artist is capable of. Juxtapose is far less fractured, certainly easier on the ears, but is unfortunately marred by some terrible guest singers and rappers. The album is credited to Tricky with DJ Muggs and Grease and feature four extra vocalists, but unlike the Nearly God project we do not get the caliber of Bjork, Terry Hall and Nehna Cherry, instead anyone heard of; Maddog, D’Na, Kioka, Bob Khalaal? On the strength of this you never will. All the usual themes of claustrophobia, disturbing sex and an ambivalent attitude toward guns and ganstas although present, does not create a convincing atmosphere. Lasting bearly over half an hour and with one song repeated twice (with a not dissimilar Metal mix), is it worth the money? Especially as the song that really works is the excellent single For real. Buy that instead.
