Bits
TV, Richard Young, 20 January 1999 Rating: F4

For those nocturnes desperately seeking late-night televisual entertainment, the small screen has precious little to offer, with the exception of Channel Four's "Later" collection of progs. And it is 4Later we have to thank for the one and currently only decent computer games show: "Bits". Intelligently written, unbiased and genuinely informative, Bits is made all the more palatable due to it's three funky female hosts, American Aleks Krotoski, German Claudia Trimde and Brit Emily Newton-Dunn. Sexy? Certainly. Sassy? For sure. But the Bits babes appear not only to know what they are talking about, but genuinely enjoy their subject matter as well. It's an industry which for some, conjours up images of spotty schoolboys who haven't yet discovered girls, and twenty-something guys who have discovered them but still don't know what they're for. And here are three talented young ladies creating an apparently impossible union: Coolness and video games. This week they review racing, boxing and strategy games with gusto and (sometimes biting) honesty. Crazy "street" camera work is thankfully kept to a minimum, but this weeks' visual gimmick had a definite fruity theme. They use bananas as handguns, punch apples into blokes' gobs, and feed each other grapes. And who doesn't enjoy watching them arse around on their sofa during the end credits?

Channel 4 Friday 00.05 BST repeated Saturday 03.15 BST
