Celebrity Late Night Poker
TV, Jerry Carpenter, 20 January 1999 Rating: F2

I’ve always tried to elevate watching TV late night to some sort of art form, or at least construct a flawless formula for going about absorbing it without too much damage to my retinas. With keen foresight and a quality weekly TV guide on hand this can be an easy path to tread – it’s just a matter of making sure you don’t get tricked into watching something that seems pretty cool at first, but turns into the televisual chloroform seconds later. Next thing you know you’ll be waking up in your day clothes slumped on the floor with Johnny Vaughn babbling incoherently – and you’ll have missed ‘Planet Rock Profiles’. ‘Late Night Poker’ is one such landmine.

Now I know a few folk who really like this, so that’s why I originally tuned in. That and the fact that it’s a rare chance to catch 80’s techno icon Clive Sinclair in action – the guy lives opposite my work, and every time I see him he’s looking miserable, so I was hoping being on TV as a ‘celebrity’ might cheer him up again. Well fat chance for poor Clivie, as he seems to be in the company of some serious sharks, including the totally impregnable poker king from the last series ‘Devilfish’. Not that I want to suggest it’s exciting or anything, it’s totally NOT. Sometimes it’s nice to catch a show that’s devoid of over stylised visual trimmings, something up front and honest – not ‘Robot Wars’ basically. But this show is a step too far, it is just some homely-looking people playing cards, with some mundane commentary to remind you who’s hand will beat who’s. And that’s it. And ..just…thinking about it…makes me ..y.a..w…….zzzzzzzz.
