Check out any press on the return of Dawson and they all pick up on the same thing, those heavily articulate teens. I can’t tell if that’s a bad thing or not, surely if your characters can put across those deep rooted youthful anxieties in a nicely played out package of witty wordy script and soulful facial expressions then you’re onto a winner. For the majority of the cast it’s true, but the problem lies with ol’ Dawson himself – being the main focus of the show he seems to be the conduit for twice the amount of angst, and that much soul searching has lead to him becoming the most irritating aspect. His relationship with hottie creek pal Joey has been on and off so many times now I don’t give a monkeys about them any more.
That’s my initial moan, now the better news. After the last season which was packed with way too much personal tragedy and inter-character animosity, this season’s opening episodes come on like ‘American Pie’ with less grunting. To offset the Joey/Dawson stuff, they’ve dropped in a sexy stripper to shake up the D-man and potentially bust his cherry. Already in the last episode we’ve seen a ‘crazy’ strippers party at the Dawson residence while pop is away on business to raise money for the boat damaged when the D-man lost control of it while receiving jollies from saucy fox Eve. Sound like the old series at all ?. This is all much more fun, with a dramatic sense of timing that I’ve previously only come across in morning soap-operas like ‘Sunset Beach (R.I.P.).
The satellite characters and their sub-plots have been cranked up in the new show too. Whereas pouty Jen spent last season fighting a psychological war with her hard-core Christian mom and getting boozed up to the eyeballs when possible, this time her major emotional problem is how to wriggle out of her new responsibility as head cheerleader !. Pacey is still the witty wagster, on hand to goad Dawson into ‘fun’ and commiserate moany Joey about the stripper thing. If things keep moving along like this, then by the end of the season we should be seeing the previously sullen teens going on a wild drug-fuelled bus tour of Mexico in drag. With wistful singersongwritey background tunes of course.
