Digimon
TV, Jerry Carpenter, 20 January 1999 Rating: F1

Hang on, this seems familiar. Not in the way that ‘Street Hawk’ and ‘Automan’ felt simliar to ‘Knight Rider’, where it was the same concept with a twist – ‘now he’s on a BIKE/TANK/BOAT’ etc. But this is exactly the same as a certain other Saturday morning hyper-successful cute-creature combat anime show. When you’re playing the rip-off game you have to have at least a teaspoonfull of respect for the original source. But not this time. This time they’ve really gone and done it.

I don’t know what’s worse, the fact that they’ve slotted this show into the Saturday morning SMTV slot without so much as a by-your-leave, or that the presenters of the show (who I’ve said on previous occasions were pretty sussed) are dealing with the situation in the ostrich head in the sand fashion. You bloody traitors! Ok, here's the sauce, where ‘Pokemon’ is genuinely funny with classy characterisation and an engaging arc-story, ‘Digimon’ is shit.

It’s shit because the ‘Digimon’ SPEAK! – and that SUCKS. It’s shit because the animation is barely animation at all, that, most of the time the characters are speaking but they’re mouths aren’t moving. It’s shit because the assembled ‘cute’ creatures look HORRIBLE, like something you’d toss away if you found it in a packet of Coco-puffs. It’s shit because the characters DON’T STOP TALKING EVERÂ….they just go on and on and on and on and on and AAARGHHH! How can you get a foot hold on the events when they won’t stop the expository landslide. Is that enough?

Specifics? Well where in Pokemon you had just the three kids, in this there’s loads of them .And they’re all the same. They’re even dubbed by the same two people. Also it's set in some weird surreal landscape ( which to be fair doesn’t look that bad), but for no real reason – they just think it looks cool. As for the all important warped logic behind a society where people collect cute creatures for breeding fighting and being pals with, ‘Digimon’s world doesn’t seem to have has anywhere near the same thought process put into it. These creatures just evolve when things get tough, the de-evolve afterwards, Hulk-style.

So perhaps I’m wrong, it’s not a rip-off, because it’s so the diametric opposite of enjoyable it couldn’t be even tenth cousin related to the majesty that is Pikachu and pals. Don’t bother catching one, let alone em’ all.
