Long, long time ago, crappy late night TV was the sole domain of one TV station – ITV, with a mind numbing mix of continental movies, cut-and-paste entertainment shows, and most importantly shoebox budget homegrown regional shows. These little half hour slices of incompetence made staying up worthwhile for fans of enthusiastic lameness – ‘Pub Quiz’, ‘Nite Bites’, ‘The Londoners’ - everyone a landmark. Now C4 and C5 are taking their best shot, and the late night schedules are jam packed with gems for the unemployed, the dispossed and insomniacs everywhere to eat cornflakes to.
Now Channel 5 usually holds the cards on the thrilling world of late night erotica – they pretty much defined the genre of the ‘serious’ documentary-style peek into the world of sex, always packed with enough wank footage to satisfy the Kleenex brigade. ‘Digital Sex’, part of C4’s 4Later line-up, takes up the format, and injects it with a healthy dollop of ‘Eurotrash’-esque irreverence, and all on a low, low budget that would put all-time no money, no-brains classic ‘Get Stuffed’ to shame.
Every programme sends gay-filmmaker and charming fopmeister Amory Peart to investigate four of the more usual aspects of the sexual universe. This week we’ve had vacuum beds, hyper realistic sex dolls, mastubation councillors, and the lucky people who have the god-given ability to suck themselves off. Amory aquits himself amongst all this with boundless enthusiasm, and seems up to try out everything – having a spell in the sucky bed, getting his fingers into the prosthetic genital parts of the RealDolls, only stopping short of the self oral-action because of a bad back or something.
It’s all filmed on ASDA budget video stock, and linked with ace cheapo-erotic montages. Thankfully the cheapness doesn’t detract from the eye popping subject matter, and anytime you find yourself nodding off, ol’ Amory starts enthusing and gesticulating wildly like some younger, camper Magnus Pike, and you feel obliged to pay attention. Titterlating, but definitely with the emphasis on the tittering.
