Dotcomedy
TV, Richard Young, 20 January 1999 Rating: F1

This Friday saw the opening shows of two new comedy series on Channel 4. One is intelligent, witty and original (Smack the Pony – the second season), the other is Dotcomedy. If Channel Four let this pile of dirty socks sit on our screens for longer than a couple of weeks, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle. Hosted by world stare-out champion, wee Gail Porter, and unknown (and deserves to remain so) Chris Addison, this pitiful excuse for entertainment manages to fall at every hurdle. We, and the studio audience, are forced to watch Chris and Gail fumble with mice and mumble about what they find funny or amusing on the internet in the form of amusing spams or sites. The problem with this kind of format is that fundamentally, to watch somebody surf the net is about as entertaining as watching someone else watch television. Scan Cat, rectal insertion x-rays, amusing "you’ve been maimed" mpeg movies, if you have internet access, you will already have seen it. Even Graham Norton knew how to make a website look funny especially if it didn’t intend to be. Throw in some cringingly unfunny public participation, poor scripting and embarrassing silences, and you haveÂ…well, the 11 O’clock show to be precise. Unlike Ian "Chris Morris wannabe" Lee and Daisy "charisma transplant donor" Donovan, at least Ms. Porter pretends she is having a good time. Not even the presence of special guest, the gorgeous Saffron from Republica (who’s fave site is the Force.net – top gal!), could save this almighty screw-up of a show. I would expect the morons at BBC light entertainment to come up with shows like this and the 11 O’clock show. But please, Channel Four, you know what good programming is, so please stop insulting your audiences with immature and embarrassing pap like this.
